Cheeky Cherry Cooler Recipe
It’s cherry season and I have been picking and picking away at them for weeks when it came to mind that I have never had a cherry smoothie! So obviously I had to create one. Cherries are one of favourite summer fruits, how could i not! My Cheeky Cherry Cooler is the perfect summer drink. It’s ridiculously refreshing while sweet and flavourful, keeping you full while keeping your belly flat, along with providing the body with a ton of nutrients. Cherry season comes and goes in a blink of an eye so make sure you get enough while they are around!
These little gems are packed with antioxidants that offer many health benefits including insomnia, cancer prevention, ageing and belly fat!
Cherries contain natural melatonin which is secreted by the pinael gland in the middle of the brain, about the size of a pea, which is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light. Melantonin is responsible for maintaing your bodies circadian rhythm which is your internal clock which plays a critical role in when to fall asleep and when to wake up. When it is dark your body produces more melatonin and when it’s light that production rate goes down. Along with eating cherries make sure to avoid working late, using phones and computers etc and allow our bodies to do what they need to do naturally, that way you can get some real beauty sleep!
In a 2009 study that was published in the Journal of Medical Food, rats that received whole tart cherry powder for 90 days, mixed into a high-fat diet, didn’t gain as much weight or build up as much body fat as rats that didn’t receive cherries. The rats also showed reduced inflammation in their blood leading to improving heart conditions and weight loss! That’s pretty amazing for those of us who want to avoid the dreaded belly fat!
Cherries are high in antioxidants. The body uses antioxidants to prevent itself from damage caused by oxygen which is the cause of disease like cancer and heart disease. The anthocyanins compound of cherries has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities have shown to prevent tumour development in mice and the growth of human colon cancer cell lines. These same antioxidants help prevent eye damage and dementia.
A study published in the Journal of Natural Products found that the nthocyanins and cyanidin isolated from tart cherries showed better anti-inflammatory activity than aspirin!
